Joey's Story
Joey has an infectious spirit and a rare gift for making others feel at ease. These qualities came in handy when Joey found himself on the cancer ward at The Hospital for Sick Children.
Like many other children his age, Joey loves to swim. It was in the pool in June 2009 that he first began feeling pain in his right shoulder. Being such an active boy, Joey’s mother assumed it was an injury from one of Joey’s karate lessons or other activities. Doctors initially thought he had torn his rotator cuff, but a trip to The Hospital for Sick Children in September showed that Joey had Ewing’s sarcoma; a rare form of bone cancer usually found in adolescents.
While most of his classmates began Grade 2, Joey endured countless tests, several rounds of chemotherapy treatment and a 16-hour surgery at SickKids.. He experienced many side effects from his medications, which included losing 25 pounds in just a few months. Because of the rapid weight loss he was hooked up to a feeding tube for two months. Still, Joey kept smiling and remained brave.
Now, two years after Joey began feeling pain in his shoulder; he is back at home. He still visits SickKids to ensure that he remains healthy. Joey has remained brave throughout his treatment. He has decided that it’s his mission to share his story and to help others who are going through cancer treatment.
